Welcome to Modern Métis Woman

Modern Métis Woman is a non-government (NGO) Incorporated Canadian Non-Profit Corporation operating as a charity registered with Revenue Canada.

Modern Métis Woman was founded by Carleigh Milburn in 2017 to provide an online community to empower Métis Women.

Our Objective

To offer a creative outlet for expression and an alternative opportunity for digitized art to be published that brings attention to our scholarship opportunities. We hope to enlighten others on Métis traditions, heritage and culture from these submissions.

We are looking for Métis identifying women or supporters of Métis Women who will provide short stories, novels, blogs, poems, paintings, and any other creative expressions of art in support of our initiative.

Modern Métis Woman offers scholarship opportunities that can further assist Métis identifying woman that are, or will be, attending a University in Canada.

Our Terminology

At Modern Métis Woman we define Métis as a person who self-identifies as Métis, is distinct from other Aboriginal peoples, is of historic verifiable ancestry and is accepted by Modern Métis Woman. At Modern Métis Woman we are also very committed to diversity and inclusion.

“Woman” includes the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) community. As an organization, we also recognize that an aboriginal person comes in a variety of skin colours.
